Farmers used water buffalo to help carry heavy loads and till the soil. An important asset for farmers, water buffalo were originally introduced from the mainland. While many of the water buffalo were domesticated, those left in the wild were rather fierce, and prone to attaching people when provoked (Chung 1997, p. 201).
