Covered sidewalk with parked bicycles and signs for Osaka Mainichi Shinbun (Osaka Daily News) and the Yamada Clothing Store. Major thoroughfares in Taiwanese cities have a feature that distinguishes them from those on the home island (Japan): the use of arcades called Tingzijiao 亭仔脚 to protect pedestrians from the elements (Nihon chiri taikei 1930, p. 309).

Taipei Sakaemachi Street 栄町通り, currently Hengyang Road 衡陽路. Two store signs, the Matsui Silk Store 松井呉服店and the Murai Enterprises 村井商行 on the right are on Sakaemachi according to a 1935 Tourist Map of Taipei (Tsuchida 2005, p. 346). The 1930 Atlas of Imperial Japan calls Sakaemachi the ""Ginza of Taiwan,"" after the thriving, trendy district of Tokyo that was built during the early Meiji period. Sakaemachi stretched from Taipei Park to the Western Gate of the inner city (Nihon chiri taikei 1930, p. 18).

A b/w photo of the same buildings and signs, also shot at night from the same angle, appears in (Shisei Yonjisshūnen Kinen 1939, p. 1), a photo album from a 1935 exhibition.

The three-parallel road was built from the ruins of the destroyed Taipei castle. Today (2004), Aiguoxi lu 愛国西路 covers the old Japanese boulevard (Zhuang 2004, p. 43).
