[wa0213] 20 Teppai (A boat of a bamboo wraft[sic]), Formosa. 500 Water and Land Transport; 501 BoatsYao Tsun Hsiung: ""Since Taiwan is an island, besides traditional farming, many of the residents of Taiwan made their living by fishing. The scene of a sampan or fishing boat raising its sail and heading out to sea was thus often used to convey the lifestyle of many residents of Taiwan, and commonly appeared as a visual symbol in contemporary propaganda materials. For instance, the publicity postcards for such varied activities as 'Taiwan Mutual-Progress Fair,' and 'Commemoration of the Itinerary of Prince Hirohito in Taiwan,' all used pictures of sampans or fishing boats to emphasize the features of Taiwan's island environment"" (Yao 2006, p. 67).
