H. Suzuki's caption has been copied onto the back of this card, suggesting that one of the Warners read H. Suzuki's 1935 photo album, or that Warner and Suzuki received this image from a common source. In addition to ""Forest of upright spears,"" H. Suzuki added [trans.]: ""Welcoming, en masse, the rare guest to the island"" (H. Suzuki 1935, p. 109).

Portraits of Aborigines, and Aboriginal themed cards present a dominant strain in the Warner collection. Of the 335 different images in the collection, 161 depict Aborigines and their material culture or geographic surroundings. On an island whose Han population has been above 95% for the duration of the 20th century, this is indeed a high percentage. This preference for Aboriginal themes, whether consumer driven or government directed, is perhaps attributable to the still predominant belief that Aborigine cultures are comparatively static and unchanging, at least compared to those of urbanized, industrialized citizenries. This photo was taken near Dragon Mountain (Longshan) temple in Taipei (Nihon chiri taikei 1930, p. 26). This photo was also reproduced as a postcard, whose caption reads, ""Street Vendor in the Native Quarter."" Matsumoto and Xie write, ""The raw materials were a mixture of flour and sweet rice powder. After this mixture was boiled, it was cooled and pigments added. In the hands of a great craftsman, pieces of exquisite works were created. This was indeed a highly entertaining traditional art"" (Matsumoto 1990, p. 405).

It is still a popular vacation destination (Storey, p. 227).

Kunanau village, Gaoxiong. H. Suzuki emphasized the dog, writing ""the dog is also a member of the family"" (1935, p. 78). The same four are also pictured in [0328]. Kasahara 笠原(1999) contains three photos of the same man as photographed by Asai Erin 浅井惠倫, tentatively placing the photo in January, 1940 (pp. 119-121), and identifies him as a headman in Kunanau. This same Kunanau headman also appears to be pictured in [wa0228] and [wa0152]. If Kasahara's dates are correct, the same Kunanau headman depicted here was an active participant in Japanese photography from as early as 1935 to as late as January, 1940.
